Seven Detestable Things
Proverbs 6:12-19
A scoundrel, a vicious man, lives by crooked speech, 13 winking his eyes, shuffling his feet, pointing with his fingers. 14 With deceit in his heart, he is always plotting evil and sowing discord. 15 Therefore disaster suddenly overcomes him; unexpectedly, he is broken beyond repair.
16 There are six things Adonai hates, seven which he detests: 17 a haughty look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that plots wicked schemes, feet swift in running to do evil, 19 a false witness who lies with every breath, and him who sows strife among brothers.
The first several verses should be understood easily. A man who is not living by the wisdom of Adonai will eventually face disaster.
The last section is where I would like to focus. Six things Adonai hates, seven he detests:
haughty look
lying tongue
hands that shed innocent blood
heart that plots wicked schemes
feet swift in running to do evil
false witness who lies with every breath
someone who sows strife among brothers
Friends, this is is the list we should study. Instead of pointing fingers at someone who is "a scoundrel," we should look at the above seven things Adonai detests and make sure that we are NOT part of those schemes. We need to make sure that OUR hearts are right instead of worrying about others.
A haughty look might be hard to describe, but I'm sure we have all looked at someone in disgust or questioned what they are doing dressed the way they are. We may not "lie," but I'm sure there are times that we have "covered our tracks because we want to look innocent." What about sowing strife among brothers? We are all guilty of that at some point, if we stop and remember the gossip we spread.
There is a reason we are not to 'judge others quickly." There is a reason we are supposed to look at ourselves before we accuse others. These verses show us moments of reflection inward. These verses give us the teaching we need to look inside and make sure our heart is right.
Stop today and let go of the sin that entangles you. Let go of the haughtiness, the lies, the strife... God CARES about YOU and wants you to COME to Him. Lay all of it as HIS feet and repent. Then peace and LIFE flow.
Love and blessings,
