Ask a question...
Matthew 22:41-46
41 Then, turning to the assembled P’rushim (Pharisees), Yeshua put a sh’eilah (question) to them: 42 “Tell me your view concerning the Messiah: whose son is he?” They said to him, “David’s.” 43 “Then how is it,” he asked them, “that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord,’ when he says,
44 ‘Adonai said to my Lord, “Sit here at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet”’?
45 If David thus calls him ‘Lord,’ how is he his son?” 46 No one could think of anything to say in reply; and from that day on, no one dared put to him another sh’eilah.
Once again Jesus answers with a question... I wish I had that technique solidified in my spirit! I wish I could think on my feet fast enough that I could respond to everyone as eloquently as He did.
Those who studied Torah knew that the Messiah was going to come from the line of David. Jesus could easily make them ponder and think about Who He might/could be.
Jesus quoted from Psalm 110:1
Adonai says to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies
your footstool.”
David understood that the Messiah was going to be from his line. David, "inspired by the Spirit" would confidently say, "Adonai says to my Lord..." He knew that Adonai would speak to the Messiah.
Jesus' question, "If David thus calls him ‘Lord,’ how is he his son?” really challenged the religious leaders. A question of this nature would make them stop to think about Who could be standing in front of them.
Jesus never forced Himself on anyone. He simply presented facts and allowed people to make a choice. This situation made that happen again. He presented a question, He had them think... now they have a choice.
We still have a choice today. We have a decision to make. Who will we believe? Who will we follow?
Praying as we daily, "ask, seek and knock" in our search for His Truth.
Love and blessings,
Rose
